ABSTRACT

The techniques and disciplines that directors use should fit their own personalities, the capabilities of the on-air talent, and the needs of the show they are directing. A director is part manager, part artist, and part psychologist. Directors give instructions to cast and crew, make sure the production is aesthetically pleasing, and handle the reasonable demands or quirks of those involved with the production. Depending on the program and the director's experience, scripts are marked in varying degrees. When the director and the production crew start to work in the studio, the director usually spends time on the studio floor before assuming the director's chair in the control room. More complete rehearsals are usually conducted with the director calling shots from the control room. When directors need to talk to talent or crew during setup, they often use the studio address (SA) or public address (PA) system.
