ABSTRACT

Grounded theory research as a general overarching approach that qualitative researchers use to analyze data. It is a method that is popular in sociology but can be found in other social sciences and education research. One qualitative approach that is commonly found in counseling and psychology is consensual qualitative research (CQR). CQR borrows ideas from grounded theory, which preceded it, as well as from other qualitative approaches. This process of building consensus is integral to the CQR method, and is adopted to strengthen the analysis by teasing out nuances in meaning and mitigate the biases of any individual researcher. Once data is collected, the first step in the CQR method is to code into domains. This refers to segmenting the data into groups according to the topics they cover. Internal stability is examined in CQR by determining the extent to which each category was general, typical, or variant.
