ABSTRACT

Maybe figuring out the new workplace is not as hard as we make it. Maybe success is no further than a recall of lessons we learned long ago. Employee manuals are huge and rarely read. Guiding principles that hang on walls are pabulum and they all say the same thing about integrity and equality. All good, but there are a few simple rules we learned in high school that apply to the world of work today. Yes, high school.

Be home when you promised. Or, at work, always live up to what you promised.

Leaving a message doesn’t mean you have permission, especially when it comes to spending money.

Let someone know where you are all the time. All the time.

If you’re in trouble, don’t negotiate.

In all cases, whatever you do, you will get caught. It just may be a matter of time.

Sounds simple, but like most simple rules, they are not always easy to follow, especially at work.
