Layoffs at one time meant you might be called back. Furloughed meant something temporary too. Both layoff and furlough now mean gone for good. Any recession could mean that once things get better, the job might come back. Maybe. Reduction in force means things are bad, set your expectations. Job eliminations mean robots are on the way. Fired always means fired.
