ABSTRACT

Speed describes the ability to cover a specific distance as fast as possible. One of the most commonly used tests of speed is the 40-yard dash, and it is often included in a battery of tests for male and female athletes who compete in sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. 1–4 Although it is likely that the original selection of 40 yards for this test was somewhat arbitrary, this distance has now become standard, and many coaches and athletes are familiar with the sprint times associated with this distance. 4
