ABSTRACT

Many athletic events involve short, intensive bouts of exercise. The performance of such activities may be limited by the capacity of an individual’s anaerobic energy production pathways. Currently, the most popular anaerobic test is the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WanT). 1 This test gauges the energy produced during phosphagen breakdown (ATP-PC system) and anaerobic glycolysis. An athlete’s anaerobic work responses can be obtained with a Monark cycle ergometer and the WanT protocol: leg pedaling at maximal effort for 30 seconds against a resistance determined by multiplying the subject’s body weight in kg by 0.075. The work performed during the 30-second period is the basis for three important anaerobic indices.
