ABSTRACT

The backward, overhead medicine ball (BOMB) throw is a test of total body power. Both upper-body and lower-body power contribute to the distance the medicine ball can be thrown. 4 While the test is designed to assess total body power, to date there is no equation that can be used to estimate power output (expressed in Watts) from the distance the medicine ball is thrown. Rather, it is assumed that longer distances are associated with greater muscular power output. Recent studies have shown that the distance the medicine ball is thrown is correlated with other indices of muscular power, such as the vertical jump. 2–4
