ABSTRACT

The quantification of muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) has been used clinically to evaluate the nutritional status of children, the elderly, and individuals with muscle-wasting diseases or injuries. 3 In nonclinical settings, the quantification of muscle CSA has been used to describe and compare athletic and non-athletic populations, predict muscular strength and strength per unit of muscle CSA, and examine the effects of various interventions on hypertrophy and atrophy. 3
