ABSTRACT

Flexibility is a measure of the range of motion at a specific joint. Just because an individual has a large range of motion at the hip joint does not mean the person is also “flexible” at the shoulder joint. Furthermore, the need for flexibility at a specific joint depends on the sports or activities in which the individual participates. For example, baseball pitchers, gymnasts, swimmers, and wrestlers require great flexibility at the shoulder joint, while swimmers, dancers, divers, and jumpers (long jump, high jump, triple jump, etc.) need substantial ankle flexibility. Therefore, flexibility assessments should be selected based on the demands of the sport or activity.
