ABSTRACT

Endurance capabilities are reflected in one’s ability to take in and utilize oxygen. Oxygen is a crucial factor in the operation of the electron transport system, where the production of large quantities of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) occurs as a result of oxidative metabolism. The ability to sustain moderate to high-intensity exercise for appreciable lengths of time is based on the rate at which ATP can be produced by oxidative means. Consequently, this rate will be reflected by the rate at which oxygen is consumed (taken in and utilized): oxygen consumption rate or VO2. One means of describing the cardiorespiratory endurance fitness level of an individual is by determining maximal oxygen consumption rate (VO2 max).
