ABSTRACT

Physical education grading is probably one of the most complex measurement and evaluation systems in education. This is because physical educators must measure not only knowledge but sports skill and fitness as well. In sports, one of the most important measurement and evaluation tasks is putting together the best possible team from the players who are available. Accurate measurement in the realm of sport psychology is more complex than for simple physical performance, because psychological concepts have multiple underlying constructs. Measurement is seldom a goal in itself. Instead, we measure things in order to make accurate evaluations. In turn, accurate evaluations allow us to make better professional decisions, whether we are teaching, coaching, or caring for athletes or patients. Measurement and evaluation are necessary to understand trends in health behaviors so that health professionals can determine what interventions are needed and how well interventions are working.
