ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the prevalence of diversity training among organizations today. It outlines the four steps involved in designing effective diversity training programs: conducting a needs analysis, evaluating antecedent training conditions, selecting the training methods, and ensuring effective post-training conditions. The chapter introduces managers of sport organizations to the tools needed to conduct effective diversity training, with the goal of creating and sustaining a diverse and inclusive work environment. It also outlines both the positive and negative effects of diversity training in the organizational context. The organizational analysis requires managers to examine all of the elements of the organization that may affect the training's effectiveness. A job/task analysis entails collecting information related to the specific duties of each job. Although some organizations include diversity-related criteria on their performance appraisals, most do not. The chapter discusses general principles that managers and trainers should consider when delivering a diversity training program.
