ABSTRACT
The combination of sex and alcohol is nothing new for most of you. The desire for sex and a desire to be part of the hookup scene lead to reliance on alcohol to ease social awkwardness. Drinking alcohol lowers inhibitions, and the hookup scene flourishes under these conditions-very intentionally. There is an unspoken social contract that most people at parties are open to engaging in excessive drinking and casual sex. Social media and word of mouth help normalize the behaviors and feed the widespread perception that “everyone is doing it.” Getting drunk and hooking up is considered a rite of passage that young people take lightly (or appear to take lightly).
