ABSTRACT

It is a hot August afternoon when Joan Williams picks up her nine-year- old daughter, Shelby, from her first day of school outside Rowley School for the Deaf. Joan is nervous about hearing how the day went, but Shelby greets her with a smile, a hug, and a kiss on the cheek. Shelby can’t wait to tell her mom about all the things they did in school that day, especially on the field during hockey practice. After listening to her give all the details, Joan breathes a sigh of relief that her daughter experienced a good first day of school. Shelby’s father, Doug, is also delighted at her first day’s experience.
