ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the clinical evaluation and management of 18 different talocrural (ankle), tarsal (foot), and phalangal (toes) pathologies using both on-field and off-field scenarios. These are presented in a variety of settings with a diverse patient population, including collegiate, high school, performance arts, and the military. The ankle, foot, and toe pathologies presented in the chapter include acute and chronic injuries, such as sprains, strains, and the bony and neurovascular conditions typically encountered during the practice of athletic training. Several of the cases are actual situations that have occurred in our own clinical practices. Some of the cases presented in the chapter have intentionally been written with inappropriate actions, procedures, treatments, and general mismanagement of the case by the clinician. This allows one to critically analyze the cases in order to identify the inappropriate decision(s) and then be able to provide the appropriate gold-standard treatment.
