ABSTRACT

This chapter provides ten different scenarios that covers injuries to the thorax and abdominal regions. Particular emphasis will be placed on the major thoracic and abdominal organs of these regions, but other conditions and injuries will also be presented. As with all scenarios in this text, they are presented in a manner to provide enough crucial information to answer the questions. How-ever, some information will be intentionally omitted, and presented sometimes in the wrong order, to promote critical thinking skills. The muscles of the thorax and abdomen aid in respiration, protect internal organs, or are used for movement. The diaphragm assists with respiration by increasing the size or cavity of the thorax region, allowing air to be pulled into the lungs. The thorax and abdominal cavity houses numerous organs, all of which are needed to sustain life. The abdominal organs can be classified into regions or quadrants for ease of identification.
