ABSTRACT
E ach cell of every tissue in the human body depends on oxidative metabolism for energy. A specialized respiratory system is necessary to provide the oxygen for metabolism. The respiratory process can be broken down into three component functions:
1. Gas exchange in the lungs, in which the blood in the lung capillaries takes up oxygen and gives up much of its carbon dioxide.
