ABSTRACT

U ndergraduate students in exercise science, physical education, and coachingoften regard physiology of exercise and sport as one of the more difficult and rigorous courses in the curriculum. Common questions are, “Do I need an entire course to tell me that exercise is good for me?” or “Is all this scientific preparation really necessary so that I can teach physical education and coach track, swimming, football, and so on?” These are fair questions. In this chapter we answer these questions and give an overview of interesting, provocative, and highly practical material on the physiological basis of human movement, whether performed for work, play, health, physical fitness, or training for athletic competition.
