ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Incentives, which is the third pillar of the CHILDREN model of factors which influence progress towards the International Safeguards. It suggests that there needs to be a clear reason for individuals and an organisation to work towards the Safeguards. This pillar therefore relates to the strategies which are used to motivate people to safeguard children within the organisation. Key issues are considered in terms of how people and organisations can initially be incentivised and with respect to how this can then be sustained over time. Promising practices are outlined in terms of both internal incentives (e.g., links to existing goals, the disclosure of safeguarding concerns within the organisation and making participation a requirement) and external incentives (e.g., links to funding, accreditation and the disclosure of safeguarding concerns in other organisations). The case study in this chapter focuses on an international federation who works with member organisations around the world. It highlights how these members were incentivised to work towards the Safeguards through raising awareness, using and rewarding safeguarding champions and providing clear support to guide progress.
