ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Dynamic, which is the fifth pillar of the CHILDREN model of factors which influence progress towards the International Safeguards. It suggests that the safeguarding systems within an organisation need to continually be reviewed and adapted to maintain their relevance and effectiveness. Working towards the International Safeguards should therefore be viewed as a dynamic journey along which one never actually reaches the destination. Key issues are considered in terms of being aware of the current status of safeguarding, having an adaptable approach and working within constraints. Promising practices are outlined in terms of viewing safeguarding as a journey, setting goals, conducting periodic reviews and celebrating successes. The case study in this chapter focuses on the work of an international sport for development organisation. It emphasises that the journey towards the Safeguards takes time. This journey can be facilitated through having flexibility built into the implementation such that safeguarding can be tailored to the political and social norms of the context. The approach can be informed through periodic reviews and people can be supported by the provision of mentors to guide progress.
