ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the findings of research which has investigated maltreatment in sport. The prevalence of a range of different forms of maltreatment is presented. Both relational forms of maltreatment (e.g., sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect) as well as non-relational (e.g., institutional maltreatment and hazing) are considered. The limitations and gaps in this body of literature are discussed. A model is then presented which encapsulates all of the factors which have been shown by research to potentially increase the risk of maltreatment in sport. This model identifies the need for safeguarding to mitigate these risks, and hence, it sets the scene for the current project to be introduced in the subsequent chapters.
