ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the final version of the International Safeguards for Children in Sport along with the underlying principles and aims. The eight Safeguards are: Developing Your Policy, Procedures for Responding to Safeguarding Concerns, Advice and Support, Minimising Risks to Children, Guidelines for Behaviour, Recruiting, Training and Communicating, Working with Partners, and Monitoring and Evaluating. The content and rationale for each Safeguard are presented along with the related criteria. The five key steps of the safeguarding journey are outlined. The chapter concludes by describing the widespread endorsement of the Safeguards, the UNICEF Safeguarding in Sport Award and the ways in which the findings have been disseminated.

This lays the foundations for a holistic approach to ensuring children’s safety and protection in all sports contexts internationally. The chapter will outline the aims and principles of the Safeguards, along with the five key steps of implementation which have been created to guide all organisations in their safeguarding journey. To conclude, this chapter will discuss the early impact of the Safeguards, presenting evidence of its widespread endorsement and dissemination. The role of the Safeguards in the recent development of the International Safeguarding in Sport Awards will also be discussed.
