ABSTRACT

Pennovation Works, as the site was christened, thus evolved into the University of Pennsylvania's dedicated innovation hub. Christened the Innovation Campus, it was envisaged as a driver of a technological ecosystem in Illawarra, that would help to stem the brain drain of the University's graduates whilst creating a destination for innovators and investors. The Centre provides a purpose-built home for the iAccelerate programme, aimed at rapidly developing technology-focused businesses. Furthermore, though, it makes play with the idea that soon Illawarra will have new export industries, thanks to the wave of technological innovation that the iAccelerate Centre will help breed. Its location, at the pedestrian entrance to the University's Innovation Park a five-hectare enterprise park next to its Jubilee Campus was the starting point for its design. The Ingenuity Centre takes the form of a circular, steel-framed structure, its shape echoing that of bicycle wheels but also reflecting an awareness that the building would be viewed from multiple angles.
