ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the evidence of the warfare thesis in current creationist–evolution debates and examines major substantive differences that may contribute to possible continuing intellectual warfare between creationist theories and evolutionary thought. A possibility is that there will be yet another change in the legal strategy of creationists including legislative requirements to simply point to possible weaknesses in evolutionary theory. The clash between evolution and creationism is clearly evident in educational settings, popular literature, scholarly literature, and legal and judicial activities. Though there is a vast literature on the theoretical problems associated with teleology in science, the chapter focuses on the practical ways teleology plays out in creationism and science. There is a vast literature on the complexity problem—a literature that appears to point to irreconcilable differences between creationism and evolution. Tensions between evolutionists and creationists are not simply intellectual, they are visceral affairs of the gut over issues of morality and honesty.
