ABSTRACT

It is rare to receive training in self-care as a therapist. Trauma clients’ severe dysregulation can spill over into violence towards self or other. Therapist self-care means implementing policies that reduce risk in the workplace, such as adequate supervision, safety procedure drills, trainings in de-escalation, violence prevention, and mindfulness. It means agencies prioritize their employees’ safety physically and emotionally. Personal self-care means tending to our own multidimensional needs on a regular basis as part of the work. Techniques for healing each of the koshas (mind/body layers) are presented so that therapists may develop a plan for resilience and endurance.
