ABSTRACT

Some of the most challenging data analyses involve DNA, often within medical fields. There are areas of sports science such as talent identification and development planning in which such data analyses may be valuable. This chapter provides a gentle introduction to genetics and discusses the processes of analysing genomics data to identify markers and pathways and their potential value in sports. Identification of genomics markers linked to biological processes crucial for sports performance, such as those related to metabolism and muscle development, are particularly useful to decision making in sports science. This chapter also provides a case study with a sample dataset, code for analysis and results to enhance understanding through hands-on practical work.
