ABSTRACT

This chapter expresses that the majority of the Uyghur respondents report high levels of spousal support and negative attitudes toward wife battery, exemplifying what modern couples do to fulfil their conjugal obligations. It also expresses that young Uyghurs, urban Uyghurs, educated Uyghurs, full-time Uyghur workers, Uyghur state workers, and Uyghur professionals are more likely than other Uyghurs to stay away from wife beating and have positive attitudes regarding spousal support, documenting the effect of modernization on Uyghur family life in Ürümchi. Spousal support refers to such things as the advice, understanding, and help that one partner receives from the other. There are two main forms of spousal support: emotional and instrumental. Emotional support includes emphatic listening and understanding, affirmation of affection, advice, and genuine concern for the welfare of the partner, whereas instrumental support is tangible help from the partner with household chores, child care, etc.
