ABSTRACT

Actors have to navigate an ever-changing work environment. Each project introduces a new boss, new venue, and in many ways, a new job description. Actors at work encounter circumstances and puzzles one would never face in other professions, and each job presents a whole new set of co-workers, which can be the most challenging thing of all. While certain steadfast protocols are easily and quickly learned, unforeseeable questions are also sure to arise. Actors must develop well-tuned instincts and learn to handle the unexpected with grace, class, and kindness.

This chapter’s questions include handling difficult interactions with castmates and directors, managing in a poorly run production, gracefully handling inappropriate requests, processing reviews from theatre critics, remaining professional amidst unprofessionalism, harassment, and abusive behavior.
