ABSTRACT

One of the great mysteries of the acting profession is how to land representation. With so many actors available, agents and managers can be highly selective about their clientele. In this chapter, the authors explain the various functions of an agent and manager—what they do and how they do it—as well as the different types of agent/client arrangements. They also tackle questions such as: dealing with a potential agent who doesn’t respond to calls or emails, how to interpret and deal with agency rejections, whether a professional actor can function without representation, tips for meetings with potential representatives, dealing with an agent’s inappropriate behavior, industry standards for commission percentages, how to stay in touch with an agent to stay on his or her “radar,” and when to consider finding a new representative.
