ABSTRACT
This chapter highlights the ways in which music is used to support, protest, mourn, and remember war. We examine how music and war have intersected throughout history, from the Second Gulf War and back to the Renaissance. We also consider music of the Vietnam War, the American Civil War, the Native American Ghost Dance, and the Holocaust. Finally, we study a trio of 20th-century concert pieces, each a response to World War II.
