ABSTRACT

The nature of production management is a case where this comparative interest may be exploited with profit. There are, in short, some interesting differences between production management in Britain and Germany. One of the most striking and probably decisive differences between the British and the German production manager is that the German operates in a much more favourable context. German Production Managers tend to be relatively better qualified than their opposite numbers in Britain, a little better qualified than their German colleagues in Sales and Finance and not as well qualified as their colleagues in Research and Development, Quality Control and Engineering. In discussing the German manager's vocabulary it was noted that the word Termin (deadline, delivery date) figures largely, as do a plethora of Termin related words, including Termintreue (faithfulness to deadlines). There is a lot of recent research evidence to suggest that in Britain production management is an unpopular, low status area of executive work.
