ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and analyzes the creation of the Mediterranean double-cross system in early 1943. The essential elements which finally came into place at that time were the development of new organizing institutions, the belated creation of viable double agents, and the improvement of signals intelligence usage. Most importantly, these innovations allowed the British to take full advantage of the disorganized and poorly staffed German Abwehr, their opponents in the espionage war in the theatre.
