ABSTRACT

Over the course of a lifetime all of people will experience one or more losses. These losses can begin in childhood with the death of a beloved pet, teacher, or grandparent. The period of pain and suffering that accompanies each loss will differ in intensity and duration. Jenny, whose only child, a daughter, died in 1992 after being shot in the back of the head, does not use the word recover when talking about her grief. After carrying the burden of the murders of two of his four sons for more than five years, a burden so oppressive that most of us, not even other bereaved parents, can begin to imagine its crushing weight, Chet also believes that the parents of murdered children do not recover. When interacting with the parents of a murdered child, it is important for the reader to remember that they know, deep in their hearts, they are not going to make a full recovery.
