Asthewordevolved,itexpandedtoincludeoneofthemostdifficult ethicalpracticesofall:toceasefeelingresentmenttowardtheoffender.It isonethingtoforgiveadebt,itisquiteanothertoforgivethedebtor. Therearesituationswhereitmightberelativelyeasy,evenpragmatic, toforgiveadebt.Onecouldloanmoneytofinanceaprojectthatfails, leavingthedebtorsohopelesslyindebtthatitisnotlikelythisperson willeverbeabletorepaytheloan.Insuchcircumstances,theimpression madeonothersbyacharitabledecisiontoforgivethedebtmaybeworth asmuchasthemoneylost.Insuchcircumstancesthedebtmightbe forgiven,buttheforgivenessmightnotextendtothedebtor.Onecould gotothegravebearinganimositytowardtheindividualwhosefailure createdthisproblem.Toforgivetheoffenderaswellastheoffenseisan actofastonishinggenerosity.
