ABSTRACT

The evidence for omega-3s being linked to mood disorders comes from many sources. This chapter shows that how social support is related to quality of life and even memory ability. Social support is related to a number of health outcomes, including depression, cardiovascular health, and immune functioning. One possibility is that people with poor health take more medications, and the depression might be related to the common observation that chronic illness is associated with a greater likelihood of being depressed. Depression is a very serious disorder that can negatively affect many aspects of an older adult's life. Apathy can be seen in many older adults who appear to be very unmotiated, lack initiative, and don't engage in goal-directed behavior. Older adults who are depressed are less likely to engage in physically or cognitively stimulating activities, which also increases their risk of experiencing significant memory problems.
