ABSTRACT

For many years, several of the churches would not allow the body of a person who had committed suicide to be brought into the sanctuary for services. At a time when the survivors most needed the loving reassurance of God, they were not allowed to mourn with Him in His house. That discrimination has now changed within most church denominations. Family members who have had a loved one die as a result of suicide often don’t receive the immediate support and sympathy they need. Friends and relatives do not know what to say and may avoid the mourners when they most need a listening ear, a loving touch, or a few words of genuine caring and concern. Spirituality becomes a key factor in the recovery process. It is important to be honest with God. The survivors can tell God what makes them so angry. One-on-one counseling can also be very beneficial for those who need individual help.
