ABSTRACT

There is a lack of privacy in the funeral home environment. People would come to the funeral home at all hours expecting that somebody would be there to answer the doorbell. Private living quarters are not always private. A visitor at one funeral home, without seeking permission to do so, took a bath in the family’s private bathroom during visitation hours. A huge drawback of funeral home living was ruined holidays and cancelled or delayed vacation plans. The holiday seasons, especially Christmas, always seem to be a very busy time at the funeral home. It’s also a sad one for the families involved. Children are very observant of everything that they have the opportunity to see or hear. Discipline, a sense of responsibility, and the importance of confidentiality were qualities that our children acquired as a result of living in a funeral home setting. Confidentiality was a major topic of discussion during meal time.
