ABSTRACT
Editing in the pure sciences (referred to hereafter as “science editing”) can
encompass a wide range of activities, call on a wide variety of skills, and relate to
a wide variety of issues. This chapter presents an overview of this diverse field. It
begins by describing the scope of science editing and discussing the relationship
to other technical editing. Then come sections on stylebooks and standards in the
sciences, ethical issues in scientific publication, interactions of science editors
with others, international aspects of science editing, organizations for science
editors, education and credentialing in science editing, and economics of science
editing. The chapter ends with a brief look ahead.
