ABSTRACT

This chapter sketches out the broad policy position regarding loss, grief and trauma in the workplace. It identifies what specific policy requirements need to be addressed in relation to loss, grief and trauma. There is a considerable irony, insofar as defensive approaches to legal compliance can actually increase the likelihood of the law being broken. Distinct from a culture of compliance is the sort of culture where the need to comply with the law is fully recognized, but it does not become a defensive priority. The primary focus is on making sure that staff and managers are committed to the organization. Grieving and trauma can create considerable confusion, not only for the people directly affected, but also for a wide range of people indirectly affected, including a network of people within the workplace. The element of unpredictability creates fear and dread that, unfortunately, fits with what the terrorists are trying to achieve.
