ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by introducing central concepts and parameters for describing and analyzing the life course. It then turns to a discussion of the many conceptual and methodological challenges associated with understanding lives the “long way” (Block, 1993), including the use of life-history calendars and matrices, retrospective and prospective strategies, and secondary and archival data; handling trajectories; characterizing continuity and discontinuity, and measuring change.
