ABSTRACT

There are many pathways to healing for reproductive loss that can guide the grief counselor to help bereaved clients work through the pain of their loss. The components within the Healing Process Model also suggest guidelines for healing interventions which the grief counselor can use to help the bereaved along the path of constructive, healthy grieving. A primary task of the grief counselor is to acknowledge the reproductive loss of the bereaved client and to communicate that acknowledgment in a supportive, empathic, and non-judgmental manner. The grief counselor should also obtain a history of other losses and stress factors as these can compound the present reproductive loss, thus intensifying the grief experience. Using the focal point of the body, mind, spirit connection provides a structure around which both the grief counselor and the bereaved themselves can assess progress along the grieving/healing journey. The grief counselor can also remind the bereaved not to overlook the healing benefits of nature.
