ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that when a pregnancy occurs, it may not be in the context of a loving committed relationship. Even though offering support, they may view her reproductive loss, miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion as a blessing. The family consists of one or more groups of individuals within the family system. There is interdependence between groups and if all groups are functioning well there is a balance and calm within the family system. A number of factors can influence how each partner and the couple together deal with reproductive loss. Reproductive loss can be superimposed on a couple whose energies are already overtaxed in dealing with other issues which can also be life and death. When a couple experiences reproductive loss this can affect the children they already have in a variety of ways. The parents of the couple suffering reproductive loss may be a source of comfort and strength or may add to the stress.
