ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the expectations for hospitality by friends. How does a friend respond if family requests, sometimes demands, are unreasonable? Rapid cultural change has significantly altered tradi­ tional expectations. Other friends in the friendorbit may not assume a reasonable share of hospitality. To what degree can offering hospitality interfere with a friend acknowledging grief? Hospitality can numb or function as an effective technique to avoid griefwork.
