ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the most historic way individuals, at least males, have demonstrated grief for friends: by carrying their friend to a final resting place. Pallbearers participate in a contemporary reenactment of an ancient drama. The movement of a corpse to final resting place has always has had great significance; society expects this act to be carried out with great solemnity, dignity, and respect. Still carrying a friend’s casket can be one of life’s most sobering respon sibilities particularly when the death was unexpected.
