Remember Mee? Arthur Mee was that English children’s editor with an optimism for life and a faith in God and the human spirit. At seventy, he developed a mysterious illness that required urgent surgery. In keeping with the style of the times, his 1940s biographer did not tell us the nature of this medical condition. Unlike our obsessions with medical categories today, he didn’t feel the need to name the illness.
