ABSTRACT

As individual and organizational communication has become increasingly mediated

by technology, countless studies have examined the use of computer and Internet

technologies in writing classrooms. But the impact of computer and Internet use on

the construction of digital documentation within various professions or organi-

zations has received little attention. That is, while teachers of computer-mediated

communication stress the impact of the computer and the Internet on communicative

practices, teachers of digital documentation focus more on the product of such

communication, namely, on the writing produced and recorded. Exploration of the

uses of technologies in the digital preservation of texts produced by disciplinary

communities may shed light on the digital’s influence on workplace practices,

relationships among community members, and the evolution of the professions.
