ABSTRACT

Let’s start with the scene of the crime we’ll investigate in this chapter. Rex was

a dog living in a backyard in “Prairie City, Texas.” On a warm summer day

in mid-August, Rex’s owner called his local telephone company (“Telecorp”1) to

report interrupted local telephone service. A few days later, a telephone service

technician opened the gate to investigate the problem. Rex, spurred on by fear

or perhaps the prospect of freedom, darted past the startled technician and into

the street. Three blocks away, he was struck by a car.
