ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses economic challenges to implementing sustainable product design. When analyzed according to the five elements of sustainable product design, the American Girl doll meets only two of the five elements. Hidden behind the success of this product is the company's failure to address the other three elements of sustainable product design. The dolls of the Kathe Kruse doll company meet many of the sustainable product design elements in that they are healthy for the consumer, beneficial to the local community, and financially viable. The project directors have also recognized the need to assist in supporting sustainable livelihoods for the men of the community and have employed five male workers in agriculture and construction at the Q'ewar House. Materials selection is relevant to all five sustainable product design criteria as it influences worker safety, consumer and environmental health, community benefits, and economic viability.
