ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses New York City as a unique locale for prepping. As a global city, New York has tremendous wealth and cultural cache. However, there remains a sharp division between the classes. New York’s recent history of terrorist attacks and natural disasters provides an important context for understanding the rising interest in prepping. The city’s geography and population size, (particularly Manhattan), poses great challenges to all facets of prepping. Prepping for disaster seems to clash against the city’s culture of immediate gratification, yet prepping is also supported by some New Yorkers’ interest in sustainability and homesteading.
