ABSTRACT

This chapter examines apocalyptic stories found in popular movies, television programs and books. The works reviewed were recommended by NYC preppers as noteworthy for understanding prepping. These works shaped a prepper’s thinking about topics like the spread of a global catastrophe, what a postapocalyptic world might be like, what strategies are crucial for survival, and the practice of social relations in a time of grave crisis. In popular culture, preppers are both characters within texts as well as consumers of texts. Some urban preppers also see themselves as creators of popular culture, intent on changing their images through social media.
